Jesus - Is NOT a cuss word!
It's been way too long since I have posted to this blog. I have no excuses. (Well, I have plenty of them, actually........writers block, way too busy, no one reads anyway, etc.)
But, here I am, and my writers block is hopefully cured........
So......….We’ve all heard it before, for certain.
In a fit of frustration or anger, someone will blurt out “jesus christ” as if this term is synonymous with other ways we may choose to curse as an English speaking human culture.
Recently I was watching a movie on television, “edited for TV”. At various times in the movie, the censors had removed some key words that started with “S” and “F” as they normally would.
However, when the name “god” came up, they would bleep out “god” and keep the “damn”. So, that was nice to hear.
Yet, when it came to “jesus” or “christ sake”, those didn’t make the cut list. ?? dozens of "JC's" as if it were as common as any other commonly accepted curse.
Interesting.
And, I’ve thought about it a lot ever since. More movies reveal similar editing, as if there is some universal acceptance now that uttering the name of Jesus in a disrespectful way has gained cultural acceptance.
I am left to wonder who gets to vote for which words are most offensive and subject to censor? It didn’t used to be this way, but as we all know, a lot of things didn’t used to be this way either.
As a defender of the name Jesus, I am just calling this out. For those in the Christian community, using the name of Jesus as a cuss word, or God for that matter, is by far the most offensive language anyone could ever use. Worse than the most derogatory term or word in the English language.
We have so many choices for ugly words to use, plenty of profane, disgusting, insensitive, and culturally accepted cuss words. Why must our cultural perpetuate, and promote the taking of the Lord’s name in vein?
As a close friend of mine used to say, “every time I hear the name of my Lord used that way, my ears literally hurt for days”.
Some who read this, they will say, “grow up” or resign themselves from it as no big deal. Others will say this rant is just another “old fuddy duddy “ who can’t roll with the times. Perhaps.
But may I plead, out of courtesy and care for people who do care, please help me help people choose from the hundreds of other word choices they have to spew anger, or for emphasis, or adjective.
May God bless those of you who help in this regard, and as well hold sacred the few things we have left to hold high in this life, regardless of your religious beliefs or sense of decency.
Now that I have that off my chest, feel free to engage me. What upsets you the most? I am anxious to hear your perspective.
